Three Brockton Elementary Schools
Will Begin Year with New Leaders
Superintendent of Schools Kathleen A. Smith is pleased to announce the appointments of two new principals in the Brockton Public Schools: Brookfield principal Valerie Brower will leave the post she has held since 2011 to lead the Mary E. Baker School while Huntington Elementary School Assistant Principal Marybeth O'Brien – who has served the school since 2004 -- will step up to lead the Huntington School.
A decision about the new principal at the Brookfield Elementary School is forthcoming.+
Prior to her work at the Brookfield, Ms. Brower was the Assistant Principal at the Hancock School and also served in Brockton as a Silber Grant Specialist, Reading Resource Specialist and a Title I Teacher.
She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Westfield State, a Master of Education in Reading from Bridgewater State University, and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Educational Leadership and Management from Fitchburg State College.
"I'm excited about the prospect of a new challenge although I've loved my time at the Brookfield," Brower said. "This is a good opportunity to grow professionally and I'm looking forward to being a part of such a dedicated and hard-working staff and helping to move the Baker's initiatives forward."
Ms. O'Brien began her career with Brockton in 2004 as a Grade 4 teacher at the Huntington. She taught until 2012 when she was appointed the Expanded Learning Time Facilitator. She was named Assistant Principal in 2015.
She is a member of the Huntington School Redesign Committee, participated on the District-wide Professional Development Subcommittee, the Strategic Planning Team and is a member of the Instructional Excellence Subcommittee.
"I'm extremely thrilled and also humbled because the Huntington School is where my career actually started and where I learned about great leadership and great instruction," O'Brien said. "I'm really excited to continue the work we began eight years ago with extended learning time to help carry the story to the next level."
She holds administrative licenses as a Principal/Assistant Principal, Grades 1through 6 and Supervisor/Director for non-core subject areas, earned a C.A.G.S. in Educational Leadership, a Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University and a Masters of Education summa cum laude from Simmons College.
Smith said she is happy to welcome both administrators to new leadership roles knowing they will continue to demonstrate the dedication and commitment that has set them apart to this point.
She also thanked both Baker Assistant Principal George Donovan and West Middle School Assistant Principal Diane Lynch for their cooperation and dedication over the past year in serving as interim principals in the two schools. Both will return to their prior posts.
