Kevin Karo Appointed Brockton High School Athletic Director
South Middle School Principal Kevin Karo, a 20-year employee of the Brockton Public Schools, has been named the new Athletic Director at Brockton High School.
"This is what I originally set out to do," said Karo, 48, who is originally from Abington, now of Hingham. He succeeds Peter Caruso, who recently retired.
"I wanted to teach, coach and become the Athletic Director and 20 years later I have come full circle," he said Friday. "All the things I have learned along the way will help me in my new role at Brockton High School."
Karo began his career in Brockton as a permanent substitute teacher at East Middle School in 1995, then a social studies teacher for the next six years, an assistant principal for three years after that and then principal at South Middle School for 11 years.
In his new role, Karo said he will take a look at adding sports, as well as ingraining the realization in his student athletes that they carry the responsibility to be role models to younger students and the community at large the moment they put on the Boxer uniform.
"Mr. Karo has a strong history of effective leadership," said BHS principal Sharon Wolder. "I believe he will be a great addition to the leadership of Brockton High and will help to enhance our athletic programs.
Superintendent Kathleen Smith said she has known Karo since he was a teacher just back from a stint in Texas, cowboy boots and all.
"He has a special relationship with students, parents and colleagues, as well as a strong knowledge of the Brockton Public Schools' sports programs," she said. "He will continue the strong tradition of opportunities for students of teamwork, sportsmanship and competition for which the City of Champions and the Brockton Public Schools are known."
Karo will start the school year at South Middle School and also spend time at BHS as the search process for his replacement begins. In the meanwhile, former athletic directors William Devin and Thomas Kenney are temporarily assisting with the position on a part-time basis.
