Brockton High School Virtual Holiday Concert Monday, December 21
Over 300 students to perform; including 31 student musicians accepted into the 2021 Southeastern Massachusetts Senior District Music Festival
(December 17, 2020 – Brockton, MA) Brockton High School bands and choirs are excited to invite the community to enjoy a Virtual Holiday Concert on Monday, December 21 at 7:00 p.m.
In lieu of the usual two-night holiday spectacular in the BHS auditorium, the show will be available live through the Brockton Community Access YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheBrocktonChannels and cable access channel 98.
The Brockton High School Holiday Concert has been a time-honored tradition that fills the auditorium with sleigh bells ringing, voices singing, and hearts beating to the sounds of festive favorites. It has been enjoyed by the young, and young at heart for over four decades and has spread the spirit of the season into our community. This year will be no exception.
“We are incredibly proud of the teachers and students involved in this year’s Holiday Concert,” Superintendent Michael Thomas said. “The students in both the band and choir should be commended for their resiliency, and ability to adapt to the circumstances. Things might look a little different this year, but this performance is a reminder to all of us that the show must go on. We are looking forward to raising our voices and our holiday spirit on Monday.”
Over 300 students in the Repertory Chorus, Concert Band, Concert Choir, and Advanced Concert Band will partake in this digital delight. Tune in to hear classics like “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, “Winter Wonderland”, “The Christmas Song”, and “Merry Christmas, Darling”, as well as unique pieces like the New Orleans-styled “When Saint Nick Comes Marching In”, and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s “Appalachian Snowfall”.
Additionally, Brockton High School Music Department is proud to announce that 31 student musicians have been accepted into the 2021 Southeastern Massachusetts Senior District Music Festival. 21 students from the chorus and 10 students from the band were chosen to be a part of this annual festival, which will be held virtually in January, due to the pandemic. These students are:
Elianna Abraham, Anna Annese, Geovanny Antunes, Royale Baez, Joey Banks, Khalil Callender, Nicholas Canal, Deborah Chagas, Rebecca Chagas, Hillary Clark, Marian Cunha, Paedyn ElChami, Kyle Gildner, Christina Giusti, Fiona Hagberg, Robert Lacey, Sharra Lewis, Kylie Noone, Daniel Onyeka, Esther Onyeka, Isabellah Paradiso, Leah Parrett, Maizel Samba, Abigail Schultz, David St. Aude, Emily Ta, Norah Thomas, Joli Veiga, Amanda Viveiros, Isis Wilson, and Serenity Young-Ferguson.
Of these students, 15 singers and 3 instrumentalists scored high enough to receive a recommendation to audition for the Massachusetts All State Music Festival, which will take place virtually in March.
Hundreds of students in grades 9-12 from over 60 schools in southeastern Massachusetts submitted audition videos in hopes of being selected. The district festival will feature student musicians in five ensembles: chorus, band, orchestra, jazz band, and percussion ensemble. Students will participate in workshops and masterclasses with respected clinicians and conductors, as they prepare to produce a virtual concert recording.
“These 31 students display incredible initiative and commitment to their craft,” Director Matthew Cunningham said. “They represent the resiliency needed to keep the music playing.”
This honor is exceptionally impressive during these unique times, as the students never rehearsed in person with their teachers, Mr. Cunningham (Choral Director), and Mr. Kardel (Band Director).
