BHS Singers Perform in Philadelphia

On Saturday, March 10, six Brockton High School singers performed in concert at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh with the 2018 American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Eastern Division Honor Choirs.

MarcCawley Bercy ’18, Angela Frazis '18, and John Pyrdol ’18 sang in the High School Honor Choir under the direction ofDr. David Fryling from Hofstra University; while, Jade Etienne '19, Mynthia Gonkpala '19, and Roalandah Theodore '18 sang in the Women Composers Honor Choir under the direction of Dr. Sharon Paul from University of Oregon.

The students spent three days rehearsing at the Westin Convention Center in Pittsburgh with over 250 of the best high school singers from the 11 states in the ACDA Eastern Division. Saturday's culminating concert was the pinnacle of the 2018 ACDA Eastern Division Conference: "Building Bridges," attended by hundreds of choral musicians from the northeast.

To be accepted into an ACDA Honor Choir, students must submit an audio recording of them singing a classical art song or aria, two scales, and "My Country Tis' of Thee" a cappella. The recording then goes through a blind pre-screening process by three separate judges. Based solely on musical excellence, selected students are invited to participate in the Honor Choir.

Brockton High School is the only Massachusetts high school to have been represented in the Honor Choirs at all three of the past ACDA conferences: 2016 Eastern Division (Boston), 2017 National (Minneapolis), and 2018 Eastern Division (Pittsburgh).

#SharedHisSpare: Davis teacher donates a kidney for a friend’s son

When it comes to the decision to donate an organ, some people say they can’t imagine doing it. But Davis Grade 7 Science Teacher John “Jake” O’Neill couldn’t imagine not doing it.

O’Neill is already back at school after giving one of his kidneys to the son of a friend three weeks ago who was in dire need of a transplant. Nick Jarvis, 20, of Middleton, is a junior at Salem State University and the Baseball Team manager. Nick has had serious lifelong medical issues and required dialysis since October at least 10 to 11 hours a day. Jake’s gift has come along just in time.

The O’Neills and Nick’s parents met when Nick’s dad and Jake’s wife worked together at General Electric. Though they drifted apart for decades, the families reunited, as people do, via Facebook. When Jake heard of Nick’s need, he said, “I threw my blood into the hat to see what would happen.” As luck would happen, he was a match.

“It has made me feel good,” O’Neill said, promoting Friday’s Blue and Green Donate a Life Day at the Davis. “At first, I was a little worried about my kids and wife and about undergoing surgery. I’ve never even stayed overnight at a hospital.”

But as time went on, O’Neill said he realized how thankful he is that his family is healthy, and then his thoughts shifted to the what ifs like … what if his kids had needed someone to step up. Or his wife? He would hope someone would want to help.

“And then I never had a moment of doubt,” he said, pointing to the small silver bracelet he wears that reads #SharedMySpare.

You wonder, he added, why people come into each other’s lives as they do. How the O’Neills and the Jarvis family met and then reconnected at just exactly the time they did. And then this, the organ donation at Brigham and Womens Hospital: “We call that God wings,” he said.

Still there are some things he can no longer do. Like take Ibuprofen, for one thing. Or play football, for another: “I will no longer be backing up Tom Brady,” O’Neill said.

As for the sky-diving outing he has discussed with his son? Well, the jury is still out on that.

Here in the Brockton Public Schools, we are proud of our dedicated, innovative teachers who give their all for the children of Brockton. We love and appreciate our teachers all year long but during National Teacher Appreciation Week it's fun to sing it from the rooftops that Brockton teachers rock.

Today's Teacher Appreciation moment is brought to you by ... West Middle School Principal Carlton Campbell who is highlighting Mrs. Laurie McCoy for National Teacher Appreciation Week. Here is what Mr. Campbell had to say:

Laurie McCoy is an outstanding teacher.  She's been serving as a teacher in the Brockton Public School System for 34 years.  Mrs. McCoy is just totally awesome!  She comes to work every day and gives  100 percent to her colleagues and students.  She is not only an outstanding math teacher but a great mom, wife and role model.  Many  of our younger teachers have learned a thing or two from her as well.  This year will mark the end of a long journey and service for Mrs. McCoy.  She will be greatly missed. To put it best, she's simply irreplaceable!  Thank you Laurie McCoy for all you have done!

Today's Teacher Appreciation moment is brought to you by ... Barrett Russell Principal Joanne Camillo who is highlighting Physical Therapist Margaret (Peggy) Longwe for  National Teacher Appreciation Week. Here is what Mrs. Camillo had to say:

BPS is very lucky to have Margaret (Peggy) Longwe as our physical therapist! She does an outstanding job servicing students throughout the district. She provides consultation to parents as well as therapy services at school. Peggy ensures that children make progress with their mobility. She assists parents with helping their children get the appropriate orthotics, wheelchairs or walkers. You can always see Peggy at school walking with children in the hallway, on the stairs, and in the gym. They sing songs as they go. Peggy works tirelessly to provide exceptional therapy to all of her students. She sees students all over the district, so she is always running from building to building.  Administrators and teachers alike value her knowledge and expertise. Peggy is loved by all. She always has a smile and an offer to help. She is truly an outstanding service provider.

The Brockton Public Schools salutes Peggy Longwe for a job well done!

Today is National School Nurses day. The nurses in in the Brockton Public Schools are life savers and do many great things for our students and staff. Here is an example of one of the projects that our nursing staff is participating in.

The Gilmore Elementary Kindergarten students planted seeds and are watching their lettuce grow in the Indoor Tower garden.  Four more tower gardens are placed in Grade 5 Gilmore classrooms to support their STEM initiatives and promote healthy organic eating.  A grant was written by School Nurse Diane Sloane to Wal-Mart, which gave $5,000 to make this possible for the students.  The children built the gardens, planted the seeds and are able to eat the produce!

We are so grateful for our nurses.
