Angelo's Girls on the Run Leader Highlighted in Boston Magazine
Please share in this great acknowledgement in Boston Magazine of GIRLS ON THE RUN, an after-school program at the Angelo School led by Grade 5 teacher, Suzanne O'Connor. The mission serves to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Mrs. O’Connell and one of our wonderful students were highlighted at an event at the Omni Parker House on Nov. 8, 2018.
The team of eight volunteers lead by Suzanne O'Connor, who received Superintendent’s Red Apple Awards last year, includes Laura Corndell, Amy Rainone, Teresa Daley, Joanne Ritz (Grade 4 teachers), Kaitlyn Norwood, Adjustment Counselor, Meghan Robbins-Tchulieu, Art teacher and Lisa Mather, Cafeteria Manager. They have given their time, heart and energy to make a true impact on the lives of these students.
The 10 week after-school program encourages positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Participants explore and discuss their own beliefs around experiences and challenges girls face at this age. They also develop important strategies and skills to help them navigate life experiences. Physical activity is woven into the program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health. The girls, who each received a new pair of sneakers, participated in a Girls on the Run 5K event on June 9, 2018, in Hopkinton, MA., the culmination of the curriculum. Completing the 5K gave the girls a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment, as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals.

BHS Concert Choir a Semi-Finalist in American Prize for Choral Performance
The Brockton High School Concert Choir is a Semi-Finalist in The American Prize for Choral Performance: Youth and School Division 2018-2019!!
The American Prize in Choral Performance recognizes and rewards the best performances by choruses in America, based on submitted recording, without bias regarding size of the community nor popularity of the artist. There is no live competition. To apply, director Matt Cunningham had to submit a 30-minute audio recording of Concert Choir singing music representative of a wide range of styles from the past 5 years.
All submissions are judged through a "blind" audition process on vocal tone, intonation, difficulty of repertoire and artistic execution. BHS is one of 10 Semi-Finalists in our division. Finalists and Winners will be announced in the coming months. Winners receive cash prizes, professional adjudication and national recognition. Here is a direct quote from their website:
The American Prize is a series of new, non-profit national competitions in the performing arts providing cash awards, professional adjudication and regional, national and international recognition for the best recorded performances by ensembles and individuals each year in the United States at the professional, college/university, church, community and secondary school levels. Administered by Hat City Music Theater, Inc., a nonprofit organization based in Danbury, Connecticut, The American Prize was founded in 2009 and is awarded annually. The competitions of The American Prize are open to all U.S. citizens, whether living in this country or abroad, and to others currently living, working and/or studying in the United States of America, its protectorates and territories.
